"So, again. I don't understand why I'm here?" Peter asked irritably, crossing his arms.
"Because I'm bored," Stiles replied, sitting down at his desk and opening his laptop. "That's why I lured you here under the pretense of a life-or-death situation or whatever I said... and I'm going to teach you memes because we're all tired of explaining every joke to you. So, basically, I volunteered to help you preserve your precious reputation in our group chat. Come on, sit down, old man."
"Excuse me?" The older man's eyes flashed a bright blue at the address. Stiles immediately waved his hands.
"Okay, okay, calm down! It's actually your own fault I called you that, because, firstly, you don't understand our memes, and secondly, you're hiding your age. Seriously, man, how old are you? Sixty?" Stiles turned in his swivel chair to face Peter.
"Sixty? Have you lost your fear?" Peter frowned.
"Oh, yeah, when you frown like that, you look exactly sixty!" Stiles chuckled, turning back to his laptop. "You... you know I'm joking, right?" The younger man glanced back cautiously.
"Do you think I'm completely stupid?" Peter sighed irritably, pulling his chair toward the table and sitting down next to her.
"No, that's why I allow myself to make jokes like these, unlike everyone else," Stilinski chuckled, opening his browser. "Okay, retirement, let's get started. Hmm..." Stiles scrolled through a few images for the search term "memes." "Here, look: you go to your browser and type in the word 'meme.' All the funny pictures are there, with or without captions. But that's only half the story."
"Stiles, what the fuck is this?" Peter covered Stiles' hand with his own to stop him scrolling, then moved the mouse to a jackal-quality image of a rooster pouring coffee with its paw, with the calligraphic caption "cafe?"
"Fuck," Stiles couldn't help but grin, shaking his head. "This is too complicated for you right now. Let's start with something simple... here!"
Stiles scrolled through a few more pictures and finally chose one — a fish from some cartoon with a very disdainful expression.
"Pfft, that's my face when they wish me dead again after I've put in my two cents," Peter snorted, resting his elbows on the edge of the table.
"Wow! Good job!" Stiles exclaimed with a joyful smile. "You can confidently send that picture when that situation happens. And it probably will," he chuckled, scrolling through the pictures further.
"So you're saying I just need to... send appropriate pictures in different situations?" Peter looked at the younger boy, starting to listen seriously to the explanation, even though he'd never admit it.
"Bingo! Let's try again with... this picture," Stiles pointed to the next meme he came across. It was a meme of a cat with its tongue hanging out.
"Funny," Peter smiled faintly, "um... that's me when they call me to give Allison's grandfather another beating."
"Phh," Stiles snorted, hiding his face in the crook of his elbow. "That was good."
Peter looked at his younger brother. "Oh my god, are we really doing this..." he thought. But on the other hand, his laugh was so funny. He propped his head up with his hand, watching Stiles enthusiastically search for new pictures to practice his theory.
"And what do you think of this one?" Stiles chose the next one — a bell pepper with a surprised look on his face.
"What the hell is that pepper?" Peter frowned, looking at the picture. "This is funny in itself."
"Yeah, but try it anyway."
"Mm..." Peter leaned back in his chair, squaring his shoulders. "That was you when Derek ordered you to cut off his arm."
"Pfft-... HAHA," the younger boy burst into laughter, slapping the back of his hand against Peter's shoulder in a fit of hysteria. Maybe it wasn't that funny, but the fact that Peter Hale himself was sitting next to him, studying memes, was incredibly absurd and hilarious. "Okay, okay... phew... let's try this differently now: I'll come up with a situation, and you pick a suitable meme. Shall we try?"
"Okay," Peter muttered, his voice no longer irritated.
"So... let's start with the easy part, Liam punched Theo in the nose again when he... sighed incorrectly."
"Oh, that one. Like Scott' face," Peter pointed, choosing almost immediately, a photoshopped cat against a backdrop of explosions. Stiles glanced at the screen and immediately burst into loud laughter again.
"Yeah, right here!" Stiles exclaimed between laughter, slowly calming down. "What if... your face when Allison friendzoned Isaac again."
"Friendzoning is...?"
"Oh, it's turning you down, ignoring you, or playing dumb when someone hits on you, flirts, and all that," the younger boy explained quickly.
"Um..." the older boy scrolled down a bit and opened a new picture — of a happy, dark-skinned man with a triumphant expression. "Here."
"That... why that?" Stiles asked, surprised, turning his gaze to Hale.
"Because I don't want them to be together. I just feel sorry for Isaac," Peter explained, earning a smirk, but Stiles immediately regained his serious expression.
"Allison's fine," he muttered, and saw the trademark eye roll. Then Stiles exhaled, "Okay, let's get past that. We've covered the basics, that's good. Do the pictures with text need explaining?" the younger boy looked at Peter.
"No, why? They're pretty self-explanatory. Well, except for that rooster."
"Oh, rooster, right... that's our next topic — absurd memes. They can be self-contained, like the rooster. It's just funny because it lacks meaning or something. Didn't you find it funny?"
"Well, I'm used to meaningful jokes, after all," Peter shrugged.
"It's okay, you'll get out of the habit. So... how do you like this one?" Stiles opened the picture of a shrimp sitting at a table with hieroglyphs on top and chuckled softly.
"What does it say?" Peter frowned.
"It doesn't matter. It's... for effect. To add to the absurdity."
"Well... okay, is there more? I don't fully understand it yet," Hale admitted, not taking his eyes off the screen. He seemed completely soft, not quite himself.
"Yeah, sure," Stiles flipped through the pages and showed a few other pictures: one with a shark in a party hat and balloons, one with a cow on a skateboard, one with a horse with springs instead of legs, and some other random ones. "Get the joke?"
"I think so. It's pretty funny. And the quality is low..." Peter chuckled softly.
Somehow he has become completely soft, he doesn’t look like himself.
